Era of Portable hard drives

I still remember those days when file storage space was limited to a mere 1.44 MB. If you never went through that era, I can safely assume that you are “young”. Those floppy drives were so limiting, you literally have to have tons of them on hand. Today, the top external hard drive can carry anywhere from 120GB to 8TB and those are the portable external hard drives. The desktop variants come in much bigger storage spaces at a lesser cost.

But why do we still carry those USB sticks?

Compared to external hard drives, the USB flash drives have limited storage capacity with an average capacity of 2-4GB and can go up to as much as 32GB. The price is relatively much more expensive if you base it on the price per gigabyte but we still opt to have one in our bags just in case.

Below are the top 5 reasons why people still opt to carry around usb flash drives:

Size – compared to the 2.5″ external hard drives, these flash drives are still smaller, less bulkier and easier to carry. They can fit anyone’s pocket and are easy to pull out at the time of need.

Portability – since they don’t require any external power source, you don’t need to look for power sockets to begin using these drives. Apart from that, they are plug and play devices that do not need additional setup.

Reliability – unlike cds/dvds, these drives are very reliable. You can trust that it will work nearly 100% of the time. CDs/DVDs have the tendency to stop working especially if you get them scratched or broken.

Toughness – How many times have you actually dropped your usb drives? I for one have dropped them too many times and not once have they stopped working. They’re pretty hard to break. Plus the fact that they have no moving parts like external hard drives do, they are less to encounter defects in the long run. I still have my 256MB drives from college and they still work great!

Cost – you can grab one for less than $10 if you don’t need the big space. And those 32GB models can be had for less than $30. Surely anyone can afford a thumb drive at that price range.

Apart from Lil Wayne’s supposedly 1 million dollar diamond studded Beats by Dre headphones, I’m sure audiophiles are wondering what the most expensive headphone is. And do the most expensive headphones equate to being the top in ear headphones?

List of the most expensive headphones

Sennheiser Orpheus

Can you afford it?

The Sennheiser Orpheus, limited to only 300 sets pretty much tops the list as being the most expensive and most popular expensive headphone until today. Priced at $16,000, I doubt the price will suffer reductions due to it’s limited nature. But if you’re lucky enough, you may stumble upon a listing on ebay such as this one which sold the Orpheus for only $12,000. And believe it or not, that was a steal at that price. Currently, one is listed on ebay for $33,000. Based on the current going market prices, you can be sure that the original buyers are holding on to their pair.

Apart from being a limited edition headphone, they actually do perform well. And for that price, I’m pretty sure anyone would expect a lot from their unit.

The sound quality is beyond amazing but it comes with one big downside, it requires a dedicated amplifier which comes with the headphones. So not necessarily something you can bring to the plane with you but the experience of hearing music from these cans is proven to be a memorable one.

Ultrasone Edition 8 S-logic headphones

Ultrasone caters to the upper market segment but doesn’t come close to the orpheus’ price. With a retail price between $1,000 to $1,100. With some reviews claiming it isn’t really worth the price tag, you can still expect sharp quality sound from these cans. What Ultrasone can’t promise you is whether or not the market price will increase or decrease in time.

Sennheiser HD800 Premiere Headphone

Of course we can’t leave out Sennheiser from the list. With a $1,500 price tag with ear pads made of Japanese Alcantara (which are very top quality), it blows out competitors within the same segment.

What can you expect from this blog?

My everyday thoughts on the latest or upcoming gadgets. I am no expert by no means but I do have the researching skills honed enough to make better purchase decisions. And with this blog I am hoping to help other people make good decisions by presenting to them the opinions and facts that I have accumulated through my own research.
